about

I used a very old piano-sketch as a starting point for this adaption of Poe's poem "Alone". During the composing-process I kicked the piano out and substituted it with clean electric guitars. I can not remember, when I have used clean electric guitars the last time and I felt a desire for this kind of guitar-sounds. All guitars are recorded with my Ibanez FRM100, a hermaphrodite-instrument, which combines elements of Fender and Gibson. One stem is recorded with the neck-pickup, the other side with the neck/middle combination to separate both guitars a bit soundwise. I searched for an ambient-like reverb and ended up with a reverb with filter-modulation, which creates some weird stereo-effects. The song changes its tonality sometimes and the music is heavily influenced by classical music with many violin-parts. The last instrumental part introduces a single bassoon. The bass is a plucked double-bass.

The poem reflects the fate of every artist, doesn't matter if it's a musician, a painter, an author. The artist can not resist to produce his art. He loves his art, though other people might not understand his dedication ("and all I loved, I loved alone"), but the art is also a kind of a demon, which never let him rest.

lyrics

Alone

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
