If you look at third short poem of Stephen Crane, you first observe a contrast between „high“, the place of the narrator, and „low“, where the devils are. Following this structure I start the song with both guitars playing in a high register. When the eye of the main person registers the devils somewhere below the guitars go down more than two octaves. A possible interpretation could be, that the main character sees himself on a high moral throne, but he realizes then, when the devils call him „Comrade“ and „Brother“, that he is not better than all others.
Recording notes: Because of the extended chords I changed my amp-setting for this song and used for both guitars the second channel of a Peavey 5150 profile with less gain than usual. Looking back on my cover of „Peace sells“ I think, that extended chords can benefit from a clearer sound. Chris had to reach a top note for this song and had to go above his comfort-zone. On the other hand I could not think of a way to transpose the song because of the contrast between high and low. After I had tested the little melody during the middle-section with a synth I was not satisfied and recorded at last a violin and a viola in octaves. This might be more original than the common use of synthesizers. I hope you enjoy this little, wild ride …
