about

This is the most adventurous track I have published since months. When I bought my first analogue synthesizer, the Makenoise 0-coast, I planned to compose whole songs on the basis of unique patches. But in my last songs I had degraded this little amazing machine to the bass-role ranked clearly below the guitars. Now the actual song „In heaven“ follows the opposite approach: The Modular-patch becomes the center of the whole song. And this was also the way the song was composed. First I sat down playing around with the synth until I stopped at an interesting patch driven by the internal clock of the 0-Coast. Next I recorded a longer part while turning knobs to create expressive changes. Then I imported the recording into Logic and started to compose the song around the Modular-recording. It happened, that I came up with a very dissonant vocal-line, very much inspired by modern classical compositions. I have tried to create an unreal atmosphere with shifting rhythms of drums and guitars, a late romantic harmonized guitar-melody and a long ambient reverb. But in the middle I inserted a stark contrast, a blastbeat combined with crushing, archaic guitar-chords. If I had to describe this track I would describe it as a cross of Anton Webern, Black Metal and Aphex Twin.
I felt inspired to something more daring and experimental because of the fine poem of Stephen Crane, which I set to music here. Though at first the poem seems a bit cute with the little blades in heaven the reader understands soon, that the blades are a symbol for the weakness and mortality of the human beings standing in front of an almighty, sometimes generous, sometimes brutal goddess. The term „blades“ let you immediately think on the personification of the death, the well-known skeleton holding a big scythe, which can easily cut many little blades.

lyrics

In heaven,
Some little blades of grass
Stood before God.
"What did you do?"
Then all save one of the little blades
Began eagerly to relate
The merits of their lives.
This one stayed a small way behind,
Ashamed.
Presently, God said,
"And what did you do?"
The little blade answered, "Oh my Lord,
Memory is bitter to me,
For, if I did good deeds,
I know not of them."
Then God, in all His splendor,
Arose from His throne.
"Oh, best little blade of grass!" He said.
