The second track for my new Metal-project, probably even more adventurous than „A man saw a ball of gold“. Let me tell you something about Stephen Crane: His poems were very much ahead of his time, because they don’t use rhymes or an obvious rhythm. They are made like concentrated „scenes“, all very short, often with a sarcastic moral. Looking at „There was before me“ he creates a hard contrast between the desperate beginning and end and the romantic middle-section. Because of the beauty the mind of the protagonist is carried away a bit from his bad situation, but in the moment, when he desires the beauty, the bad and evil comes back. Crane himself was not sure to call it a poem, therefore he called his poems „lines“.
Musically I felt inspired by the strong contrast to start with a dark and brutal section and turn the mood completely on the word „beauty“. I thought on the moment wandering through a desert and finding an oasis or also on the expedition of Scott and Amundsen, because the narrator sees snow and burning sand.
The first section is dodecaphonic. The second guitar plays the line of the first guitar as a retrograde. Then the song continues with a 7/4 section, while the drums imply a 3/4, what causes a poly-rhythm. This is the first time I try something like this and I was influenced by the extreme Metal-band Meshuggah, which often uses Poly-rhythms. After the middle-section, which alternates between 4/4 and 3/4-parts and features my infamous backing vocals the song comes back to the first part.
