When the Dead Kennedys hit the scene with their debut „Fresh fruit for rotting vegetables“ it meant a fresh kick for the stagnating Punk-scene. They introduced elements, which were never used in Punk-music before, namely Surf-Rock and Country. The high speed of many songs of them paired with aggressive and sarcastic lyrics of the charismatic singer Jello Biafra were praised in the growing underground-scene. I still remember on little Dirk dancing Pogo in Frankfurt’s infamous club „Batschkapp“, when the DJ played „Holidays in Cambodia“ or „California über allies“. The Dead Kennedys hit the nerve of the 80s, the critic on the Reagan-administration, the raising interest on ecologic themes and the atomic danger.
„Winnebago Warrior“ can be found on their second album „Plastic surgery disasters“ and is a long-time favorite of mine. It contains everything, what made the Dead Kennedys outstanding: Sarcastic lyrics about middl-classed persons riding their Winnebago, High tempo, a morricone-like interlude. When I arranged my version I thought, that the pretty melody in the middle would call for a brass-section, so I developed a brass-arrangement for it. The guitar-part is exactly like in the original, but the guitar here is sampled and deformed with the internal filter of the Digitakt. The bass is derived from a sample of my Bassculture Picco. For the first time I could use the new Overbridge-doftware by Electron. That means I could pre-arrange everything in the Digitakt and transfer it then to Logic as separate audio-files. In Logic I only added the vocals and the choir. Mixing and mastering was much more comfortable in this way.
